Restylane® is a safe and natural cosmetic dermal filler. It has been used clinically since 1996, and was approved by the FDA in 2003 to correct facial wrinkles. While Restylane® and BOTOX® Cosmetic are now often used in combination, it works differently than BOTOX® Cosmetic. It is used to restore volume and fullness to the skin, instantly correcting moderate a to severe facial wrinkles and “wrinkles at rest.” It is also used to enhance the appearance and fullness of the lips.
Restylane® is a hyaluronic acid that is found naturally in the body. It isn’t derived from animals like some forms of collagen, and therefore no skin testing is required prior to treatment. As well, because the Restylane® molecule has an affinity to bind water in the skin, its clinical effects last twice as long as collagen. Most patients see relief from their wrinkles for six months or even more. When Restylane® is combined with BOTOX® Cosmetic, the results can last for up to one year. Having a “touch-up” treatment before the Restylane® is completely reabsorbed will enhance the lasting effect.
Dr. Filer himself performs Restylane® treatments in his San Mateo office. Prior to the procedure it is important to avoid products that can predispose to bruising and bleeding. These products include aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines, St. John’s Wort and high doses of Vitamin E. Dr. Filer utilizes both topical and local anesthetic as needed prior to treatment to ensure patient comfort. The procedure takes only minutes, and the results are virtually instantaneous. Side effects, such as redness and swelling at the injection sites are usually mild and resolve in a day or two. Most patients return to work and their regular activities immediately after the treatment.
